The meaning of the abbreviation WOG on valves

The letters “WOG” on a valve body stand for Water, Oil and Gas, and it indicates the pressure rating that a valve can handle at ambient or lower temperatures when used with these substances. It is an industry standard marking that indicates the suitable media to be used with the valve.

    •
    • ● Water: refers to water based liquids
    • ● Oil: includes liquids that are thicker and more viscous than water with lubricating qualities.
    • Gas: refers to a substance in a vaporous or gaseous state like air, however it does not include combustible gasses*.
    •
    • *The term WOG is not meant to include combustible gasses and the manufacturer should be consulted to determine suitability in these situations.

      WOG Pressure Rating

      • WOG pressure is a way to state the pressure rating of the valve. It is expressed in PSI (pounds per square inch).
      • It is a number that appears on the body of the valve along with the abbreviation WOG.
      • For example a valve with a 1000 WOG rating can handle a pressure of 1000 PSI at room temperature.
      •
  • The WOG rating applies to a steady flow, one without any sudden pressure spikes (Non-shock pressure conditions)
