- Product Description:
- ● A stainless steel threaded cap is a type of pipe cap with a closed end on one side and female threads on the inside of the open end.
- ● It is a "closed" cap that threads onto male threads, closing or sealing them.
- Used for:
- ● Used to thread onto and close off or seal male threaded components.
- ● They are often used to terminate or seal the end of a pipe, stopping all flow.
- ● They are used to seal a fitting, protecting the threads and preventing any leaks from or contamination from entering.
- Advantage:
- ● They are easy to install and can be threaded on by hand to protect external threads and keep contaminants from entering.
- ● They have ridges on the side of the cap to provide extra gripping for tightening with a wrench.
- To Install:
- ● Thread the internal female threaded end onto an external male threaded opening of the same size.
- ● The protruding ridges make gripping easier when tightening with a wrench.
- Item Sizing:
- ● A threaded cap's size is based on the size of the male thread it will thread onto.
- ● For Example, A 1" cap fitting will have a 1" female thread and will thread onto a 1" male thread.
- Also referred to as:
- ● NPT Pipe Cap.
- ● Round Pipe Cap.
- ● Piping End Caps.
- ● Threaded Cap for Pipe.
- Other Options:
- ● Other options include Hex Plugs, which have male threads and are used to seal female threaded openings.
- ● Another similar option is a Square Head Plug, which is also used to protect and seal threaded components.

What is a Pipe Cap?
A cap fitting is a type of pipe cap used to seal pipe ends and male threaded components. It has internal threads that screw onto the end of a pipe or a male threaded fitting, where it is used to protect the threads, stop the flow, and keep debris and contaminants out. Essentially, it is a round cap with a closed-off ‘lid’ on one end, and has internal threads on the open end. It has protruding ridges on the sides, which serve as a gripping surface when fastening with a wrench.
What is a Cap Fitting Used For?
It is used to terminate pipe ends and seal male threaded components to protect external threads, seal openings, or stop the flow. They are used to block off threaded openings that are not being used whenever they need to be temporarily sealed. They can be removed to allow access for maintenance, facilitate testing, to keep threads protected, and keep openings safe for future expansion.
Where is a Cap Fitting Used?
A threaded cap fitting is widely used in industrial piping systems, plumbing, gas lines, and hydraulic systems to seal unused threaded connections.
Plug and Cap
The difference between cap and plug fittings lies in the gender of their threads. Plug fittings have male threads and seal a female threaded opening, while a cap fitting has female threads that screws over the end of a pipe or male threaded component. A plug fits into the opening, whereas a cap fits over the opening like a lid. both can protect the threads, prevent leaks, and protect from contaminants entering the opening.
Plug Vs Cap
| Plug | Cap |
|---|---|
| ● Fits into the threaded opening of a component | ● Threads over the outside of a component |
| ● Protects internal openings and keeps contaminants and dust out | ● Protects external threads and keeps contaminants and dust out |
| ● Seals ports and female threads to stop the flow | ● Terminates pipes and male threaded ends to block the flow. |
Types of Pipe Caps?
Threaded pipe caps are mechanical pipe caps that are used for short-term, long-term, or even permanent installations. These different types include Threaded Caps, which have internal threads; Butt-Weld Caps, which are permanently welded flush to the end of a pipe or opening; Socket-Weld Caps, which fit over the pipe end and are then welded permanently in place; and Sanitary Caps, which are installed with a tri-clamp and gasket. Pipe Caps can also be further classified according to their shape: Round Cap: circular following the shape of the pipe; Square Cap: designed for square-shaped tubes or pipes; and Hex Caps: have six sides for better gripping with a wrench.
