What is a Square Head Plug?

A square head plug is a type of pipe plug used to seal a female threaded opening. It threads into a female threaded fitting or the end of a pipe where it is used to stop the flow, keep debris and contaminants out, and to protect internal threads. Essentially, it is a short pipe plug with male threads and a square-shaped head that forms a closed plug. It gets its name from the shape of the protruding head, which has four sides. This ‘square-head’ design provides a protruding gripping surface, which enables it to be easily fastened with a socket wrench. This makes these threaded plugs ideal for applications where space is limited, where it’s difficult to get a regular wrench into the space. They are used in industrial piping, gas lines, hydraulic systems, and plumbing to block off and seal unused threaded connections.
