- Description:
- A two piece 316 ball valve is a type of valve constructed out of two separate body pieces that are joined together by threads.
- It has two openings, an inlet and an outlet, which function as end connections that are usually threaded to connect to a pipeline.
- It has a quarter turn lever style handle to open or close the flow.
- Uses:
- Used whenever a simple open/close control of the flow is required, which is why it is called a shut off ball valve.
- Used to control the flow of fluid or gas by rotating a ball which has an opening or bore in its center.
- Used to control bidirectional or two way flow since it can shut off the flow in both directions.
- Can be used to regulate the flow rate by ‘throttling’ which involves opening or closing the valve to various degrees, however this is not their primary design function and can lead to accelerated wear and tear.
- Advantages:
- Its compact body construction result in a lower cost than the heavy duty options.
- It has a more compact body compared to a heavy duty 2-piece, which saves space making it ideal for situations where there are space limitations.
- Since it is comprised of two body components, the internal parts can be accessed for cleaning, repair and replacement of the seats and seals.
- They have a long service life and can be opened and closed effectively even after long periods of not being used.
- They contain no lead and are cleaner and more environmentally friendly than valves made out of brass and other metals.
- Pressure Rating:
- Pressure rated at 1000 PSI ( WOG: for Water, Oil, or Gas).
- Port Size:
- Full port or full bore.
- The port size of the valve is the same size as the pipe’s internal diameter that it connects to.
- The full bore design minimizes pressure drop and flow restriction.
- Thread:
- These WOG valves have Female NPT threads on both the inlet and outlet threaded end connections.
- Construction:
- The valve body is made out of two separate body components that are threaded together.
- Maintenance:
- Generally under optimal conditions they don’t require maintenance.
- Major servicing like component replacements on the 2-piece usually require that the valve be removed from the application to be disassembled.(NPT threads are not best to be unscrewed)
- Not generally recommended as body can be damaged during disassembly, in most cases replacing the valve is a better option.
- With the appropriate expertise however, the body of a 2-piece valve can be taken apart and unthreaded to expose the seals (seats or body gasket), ball, and the stem.
- Applications:
- Commonly used where a high level of corrosion resistance is required, including industrial, chemical processing, food and beverage and marine applications.
- Suitable for viscous fluids, slurries, and suspension solutions with solid particles, where the internal diameter needs to remain the same as the pipeline.
- Ideal for applications where a full flow rate with a minimum pressure drop is required. (Efficient Flow)
- Cost:
- Their compact design result in a relatively low cost.
- This makes them the better priced than heavy duty stainless steel 316 ball valves, even though the specs are the same.
- Material:
- This shut off ball valve is manufactured out of high quality 316 stainless steel.
More information
A 2-piece stainless steel ball valve is a popular type of full port ball valve made up of two body components joined together by threads. This threaded body joint enables the valve to be disassembled exposing the internal parts for cleaning and maintenance and repair. The internal parts include the spherical ball, stem and seals. The most common of the internal parts to be replaced are the seals, also known as the seats or body gaskets. Generally it is not recommended to unthread the valve body as it can be damaged during disassembly. For this reason it is often better to replace the complete valve. However, with the correct expertise and tools, like a wrench and a vice, the two piece valve can be disassembled for servicing and repair. Like all 2 piece valves they have to be removed from the installation for maintenance and cannot be repaired in-line like the 3-Piece version which can be left threaded to the pipe line while taken apart for cleaning. These threaded valves have female NPT Threads making them easy to install. The NPT threads are designed to make a water tight seal and are not always easy to unscrew. Their relatively compact size makes them suitable for confined areas where space is tight and access is restricted. They are used where a high level of resistance to corrosion is needed. They are used to transfer various gases and fluids, their full port design makes them suitable for viscous fluids, slurries and suspension solutions with solid particles. Widely used in applications that require flow control in both directions (bidirectional) and a reliable shut-off. Commonly used in a wide range of industries including plumbing, food & beverage, water treatment, fuel and oil, marine, chemical processing, and are also widely used by original equipment manufacturers (OEM’s).
