• Description:
• A heavy duty two piece ball valve is a type of valve constructed out of two separate body components that are joined together by threads.
• It has two openings, a threaded inlet and an outlet which function as end connections to connect to a pipeline.
• It has a quarter turn lever style handle to open or close the flow.
• Uses:
• Used as a shut off valve whenever a simple on/off flow control is required.
• Controls the flow of gas or fluid by rotating a ball which has an opening its center.
• Controls two way or bidirectional flow shut off, can stop the flow in both directions.
• Sometimes used to control the flow rate by ‘throttling’ which involves opening the valve to various degrees, this can lead to accelerated wear and tear as this is not their primary design function.
• Advantages:
• Its heavy duty body construction results in a more robust and durable valve compared to the more compact options.
• It has a longer handle given it more leverage when opening or closing the valve.
• Since it is made up of two body parts, the internal components can be accessed for cleaning, maintenance and repair. (Usually to replace the seats and seals.)
• They have a long service life and can ‘open’ and ‘close’ even after long periods of inactivity.
• They contain no lead, therefore they are cleaner and more ecofriendly than valves made out of brass and other metals.
• Pressure Rating:
• Rated at 1000 PSI ( WOG: for Water, Oil, or Gas).
• Port Size:
• Full port or full bore. (Maximum Flow)
• The port size of the valve is the same size as the pipe diameter that it connects to.
• The full port design minimizes the pressure drop, and also minimizes restriction in the flow.
• Thread:
• These threaded valves have Female NPT threaded end connections on both the inlet and outlet.
• Construction:
• The valve body is made out of two separate body parts that are threaded together at the body joint.
• Maintenance:
• Generally under normal conditions they don’t require any maintenance.
• Major servicing like internal component replacements on the 2-piece usually require that the valve be removed from the application to be disassembled. (NPT threads are not best to be unscrewed)
• Not usually recommended as body joint can be damaged during disassembly, in many cases replacing the valve is an easier option.
• With the appropriate expertise however, the body of a 2-piece valve can be taken apart and unthreaded to expose the seals (also called seats or body gasket), ball, and the stem.
• Applications:
• Commonly used where a high level of resistance to corrosion is required, including industrial marine applications, chemical processing, and food & beverage among others.
• Suitable for viscous fluids, slurries, and suspension solutions with solid particles, where the internal diameter (ID) needs to remain the constant.
• Ideal for applications where efficient flow is required, that is a full flow rate with a minimum pressure drop.
• Cost:
• Better priced than three piece valves.
• Their heavy duty design  and longer handles result in a slightly higher cost than the regular versions.

A 2-piece SS ball valve is a common type of full bore valve made up of two body parts joined together by threads. This two-piece design allows the valve to be disassembled exposing the internal parts for cleaning and repair. The internal components include the spherical ball, stem and seals. The most common of the internal parts to be replaced are the seals, which also referred to as the seats or body gaskets. In some situations it is not recommended to unthread the valve body as it can be damaged during the disassembly process. For this reason it is often a better option to replace the valve instead of repairing it. However, with the correct expertise and tools, like a wrench and a vice, the two piece valve can be disassembled for maintenance and repair. Like all 1 piece and 2 piece valves they have to be removed from the application for maintenance and cannot be repaired in-line. The 3-Piece version can be left threaded to the pipe line while enabling you to remove the internal components for cleaning and servicing. They have female NPT Threads for easy installation to a pipe or male threaded fitting or component. The NPT threads (National Pipe Threads) are designed to make a water proof seal and are not always easy to unscrew. Their relatively larger size makes them durable and suitable for robust environments and their longer handles gives them more leverage when opening and closing the flow. They are used where a high level of corrosion resistance is required. They are used in the transfer various gases and fluids, their full bore design makes them good to be used with viscous fluids, and suspension solutions with solid particles (slurries). Commonly used in systems that require a reliable shut-off and bidirectional flow control (flow control in both directions). Widely used in a range of industries including plumbing, food and beverage, water treatment, fuel and oil, marine, and chemical processing among others.
